The generator team is responsible for the research and design of our custom generator. This will be done through researching different parts as well as constructing and testing different configurations. The generator is the heart of the turbine, so it is important to create the most efficient system possible!
About the Generator Team
The Generator team was founded in the 2024–2025 competition year with the sole purpose of building a custom generator to suit our Rice Wind Energy’s needs. Starting with a simple single-phase generator, we moved to a 6-tooth, 10-pole
design, and then to an even more efficient 9-tooth stator. So far, the team has built five unique configurations—each improving upon the last—and researched countless generator statistics and specifications along the way.
In addition to being optimized for raw power output, the generator should seamlessly integrate with the turbine’s blades in order to more efficiently generate said power. We work closely with the mechanical and control subteams to
aid in the final integration of the assembly.
We will continue to try and maximize our power output with more efficient windings and less friction, as well as potentially explore different winding and magnet configurations such as Halbach arrays in the future.
