Every year, Rice Wind Energy Engineering designs and builds a fully-functional model wind turbine to compete in the Collegiate Wind Competition. Through our relentless drive to grow and push the bounds of innovation, we optimize our turbine in three key areas: controllability, stability, and power generation.

Meet the Engineering Subteams

Rice Wind Energy Engineering is comprised of four individual subteams, each dedicated towards tackling a unique engineering challenge in wind turbine design.

Mechanical

Bringing the body of the turbine—the pitch system, nacelle, tower, and foundation—to life. 

Controls

Integrating circuitry, sensors, software control logic, and power systems into one cohesive turbine.

Designing, building, and testing Rice Wind Energy’s high-power custom generator—from scratch.

Simulating and testing at the intersection of turbine blade theory and implementation.
