About Rice Wind Energy

Founded in 2021, Rice Wind Energy is a student club and competitive collegiate team open to any undergraduate of Rice University, regardless of major or experience level. We strive to foster an innovative, challenging, and well-networked environment for members to learn and grow, providing invaluable real-world experience not obtainable through normal coursework.

We compete in the annual U.S. Department of Energy Collegiate Wind Competition (CWC), a broad-reaching competition designed to closely mimic the wind industry. By participating in the CWC, Rice Wind Energy members gain valuable experience with wind energy technology, project financing/development, and community outreach, preparing them for jobs in the wind and renewable energy workforce.

Although it often takes several years to build the knowledge and momentum to advance to the final stage of the CWC, Rice Wind Energy managed to achieve this in just its second year competing, soaring to a top-ten finish in the nation.

Team Organization

Based on the three competition areas of the CWC, Rice Wind Energy is organized into 6 different subteams, each with its own unique purpose and contribution. There are four engineering-focused subteams (Mechanical, Controls, Generator, & Blades), and two non-engineering subteams (Project Development & Connection Creation).
